Cultivating Cultural Richness to Foster Sustainable Social Development in Music And Arts: A Pathway to Building a Creative City in Suphanburi

Tanapon Chiwinpiti

In this panel we explore the cultivation of cultural richness in Suphanburi with an aim to foster sustainable social development in music and arts and build a vibrant, creative city. Suphanburi possesses a rich cultural heritage from its ancient roots to the present day, influenced by figures such as Banharn Silpa-archa and renowned artists including Montri Tramote, Waipod Petchsuphan, Kwanjit Sripajan, and Pumpuang Duangchan. However, challenges arise from the lack of academic personnel proficient in modern concepts and the limited focus on contemporary ideas. The allocation of budgetary resources towards preserving traditional cultures falls short of stimulating the creative economy. By embracing and promoting Suphanburi's musical and artistic heritage, an inclusive culture of collaboration among policymakers, artists, musicians, and the community can be fostered . This panel discussion provides practical insights for stakeholders interested in nurturing cultural richness to achieve sustainable development and establish a prosperous creative economic environment in Suphanburi, emphasising the intrinsic value of cultural heritage while upholding academic rigour.

Music Makes Changes: A Showcase of Collaborations

Music Makes Changes and Participants

In the project Music Makes Changes, by Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music, its members–which comprises music educators, musicians, professionals who work with sounds, and music enthusiasts–work together with a group of mentors (called Buddies) to design music workshops and/or activities. Under the concept of experience design, these workshops and activities present multidisciplinary approaches to music and sound; for example, combining music activities with body movement and creative writing.

  • The Cards

Created by Chanamet Vakulchai/ Pollarat Tanodkaew

Collecting cards was an activity that we engaged in at our school club at Thammasat Secondary School. In this collection, the concept of Chakra is presented via color, symbol and sound combined together. In each design session, a meditation session is conducted,  and the energy is directed into the cards, which holds and links our minds and souls in solidarity.

Group: Oracle and Tarot Cards Designer Club

Our school club is a part of Thammasat Secondary School. It is for students who enjoy drawing and love tarot cards. Every week, we meet and design tarot cards.

  • Generation Seasoned Feel Lonesome, Season Music Change

Created by Chamaporn Kajornbon

  • Melody and Friends Showcase

Created by Seksiri Denkijkul

"Melody and Friends Showcase" is a children's book for families to help strengthen bonds and relationships. By reading this book, the readers not only get to know musical terms but are also able to freely express artistic experiences from their imaginations.

  • Whose Sound

Created by Anusorn Thienwong

This activity creates a learning space for children ages 3-5 and those in primary grades to understand music. I provide an introduction to music-learning at a young age based on each person’s listening experiences. By using equipment that is easy to find, this prototype aims to help instructors continue developing the idea of creating a learning foundation for children.

  • Reading, Learning World

Created by Pimdao Inthawong

Utilizing drama, music, and other activities, this project aims to develop the reading and writing skills of twenty-three children, second to eighth graders, who live in the Ban Krua Nuea Community. Showcases of the project consisting of performances and exhibitions were presented to the community.

Prioritizing Eudaimonia in One-To-One Instrumental Music Teaching: A Conceptual Analysis

One-to-one interaction is a traditional teaching configuration that has been used in music teaching for many centuries. In traditional conservatoire education, a teacher and a student relate as master and apprentice. However, the greater emphasis on student-centred approaches in teaching-learning context in the past decades has resulted in alternative teacher-student relationship models to promote better psychological well-being in students. Music educators such as Jones and Renshaw each created teaching frameworks that music teachers can adapt to their teaching.

In this presentation, which is focused on the western classical music tradition, I provide a conceptual analysis of these two frameworks and discuss how they are related to each other. I discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each, and suggest which framework best suits various musical teaching contexts. I relate these frameworks to Seligman’s PERMA model in positive psychology to demonstrate how the frameworks benefit students in terms of self-flourishing (eudaimonia). Flourishing is essential for long-term enjoyment and sustainability in music-making. Awareness of alternative teaching styles can have wide-ranging implications; from creating a better understanding of music teaching to nurturing an ethos of service for teachers to making music learning more accessible to students.

Empowering Women Composers: A Journey Through Thai Musical Heritage

The prestigious "National Artist Award" in Thailand recognizes talented artists contributing to society. Among 181 awardees, only 29% are women due to historical gender norms. Notable composers like Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn faced challenges in gaining recognition for their musical talents. Celebrated Thai composer Thanpuying Phuangroi Aphaiwong, known for "International Thai Song," was the first Thai female composer, and her work "Buakaw" gained global acclaim. Similarly, Ms. Sukon Phornpirun's remarkable career as a composer, particularly in marching songs, showcases her creativity and talent. Education and an ability to seize opportunities were crucial factors contributing to both women’s success. Thailand now offers accessible music education, nurturing aspiring musicians. Embracing opportunities is vital for showcasing talents and unlocking future prospects. Stakeholders in Thailand's music industry must create gender-inclusive platforms for modern composers.
