Exploring Individual Differences in Learning Gucheng among Gucheng Learners in Yangzhou

Guzheng is a traditional Chinese musical instrument that is loved by people because of its elegant shape and bright tone. In recent years, the dissemination and popularisation of Guzheng art has been rapid.

 

In this presentation, I take guzheng lovers in Yangzhou as an example population and investigate the study of Guzheng using several data collection methods. I interviewed four representative guzheng educators and performers in Yangzhou: Wang Xiaoping, Cheng Li, Qian Xiaoli and Du Juan. I also investigated and studied large, medium and small music training schools in Yangzhou: Yangzhou lutaixi art school, Yangzhou colorful guzheng training center and Yangzhou Tianyi art school. I distributed 135 questionnaires to a population of 45 retirees, 45 college students and 45 minors. From my investigation and data analysis, I discovered that age, music theoretical basis, learning time, economics, teaching satisfaction and teaching material satisfaction all had an impact on the guzheng level of Guzheng learners.

 

 

Image Analysis of Female Musicians of Pipa Instruments in China from The Northern Dynasties to The Tang Dynasty

This paper analyses images of female pipa musicians, Tiangong and Feitian pipa, in the Yungang Grottoes, Northern Wei Dynasty. The images of female pipa musicians in the murals unearthed from the tomb of Guo Xing in the Tang Dynasty, and the images of contemporary female pipa musicians are the focus of my research. Through a detailed analysis of female pipa musicians' performances from three different dimensions–the heavenly world, the underground world, and real life–I explore the different identities of female pipa musicians from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty in China. The scenes of musicians participating in music performances show that female performers have an influence that cannot be ignored in the development and inheritance,of music. At the same time, the selected images also show musical exchanges and fusions between different nationalities and cultures at that time. The reasons given for why the Chinese pipa can be played using a variety of playing methods and musical languages also varies depending on the cultural perspectives of different communities at that time. The cultural exchanges between musicians makes their art inseparable. This can remind people today that, no matter whether you consider the past, the present or the future, in order to achieve sustainable development of music, musicians need to pay attention to the exchanges between different music cultures, and adopt a tolerant and friendly attitude towards foreign music cultures so that they can absorb and integrate those musical styles with their own national music cultures to create new possibilities for music.
