PGVIM Singers is an intergenerational community choir bringing together voices from different ages and backgrounds to share music and connection. In this performance, they will present three uplifting songs: the warm and welcoming Funga Alafia, the playful and familiar The Lion Sleeps Tonight, and the harmonious Friendship Canon, celebrating unity and joy through song.
Performance Program
Funga Alafia (Song of Welcome)
Traditional; arr. Jill Gallina
Originating from West Africa, Funga Alafia is a traditional welcome song offering blessings of peace, love, and joy.
The Lion Sleeps Tonight
Lyrics and revised music by George David Weiss, Hugo Peretti, and Luigi Creatore; arr. Jeff Funk
First recorded in 1939 by South African musician Solomon Linda under the title Mbube, this song has traveled across cultures and decades, gaining worldwide popularity through various adaptations—including its appearance in The Lion King.
Friendship Canon
Words and music by Mark Burrows
A joyful round celebrating the bonds of friendship, Friendship Canon invites singers to weave their voices together in harmony. Its simple, uplifting text and accessible melody create an atmosphere of connection, reminding listeners that music is a bridge that unites hearts and minds.
