Rabam Klong-yao (Hae) for Jazz Orchestra is a creative composition that seeks to integrate the cultural identity of Thai folk music with the stylistic and structural elements of jazz, arranged for a full jazz orchestra. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant and festive rhythms of Rabam Klong-yao, a traditional Thai procession music frequently performed in celebratory and ceremonial contexts, this work adapts its distinctive drum patterns into jazz idioms such as funk and Latin. The composition incorporates Thai instruments, the klong-yao (long drum) and ranad-ek (Thai xylophone), within the orchestral texture of a modern jazz ensemble, employing techniques such as polyphonic layering, extended harmonic progressions, and sectional call-and-response to bridge the two musical traditions. Its innovative aspect lies in the direct transplantation of authentic klong-yao rhythmic cycles into large-scale jazz orchestration, rather than merely referencing Thai motifs or melodies, thus creating a rhythmic foundation that retains its cultural specificity while supporting jazz-based harmonic and formal development. This approach contributes to the broader field of cross-cultural musical integration, enriching contemporary Thai music discourse and fostering cultural soft power through the presentation of a distinctly Thai musical identity on the international stage.
