Visual Guidance and the Improvising Mind: An Empirical Study of LED-Fretboard Interaction in Guitar Improvisation

This paper presents an empirical investigation of guitarist interaction with an LED-guided smart guitar (LiteJam) during free improvisation, focusing on cognitive and perceptual change across different playing modes. Four conditions were examined: standard fret markers, LED-guided mode (key-mapped), eyes closed, and gaze-averted. Results indicate a consistent hierarchy of cognitive ease and expressive confidence among these modes. The LED-guided condition received the highest ratings for emotional expression and creative confidence, with the guitarist describing the illuminated pathways as providing “advance ideas” —visual prompts that extend improvisational vocabulary beyond the repetitive defaults of ingrained muscle memory. Conversely, eyes-closed and gaze-averted conditions, which eliminate visual feedback, required a shift toward auditory-led cognition, where an internalized sound image must guide each physical gesture. Eye-tracking data corroborated these qualitative findings; in LED-guided mode, anticipatory gaze movements toward the next fret position occurred before finger placement, a pattern infrequently observed in standard mode. These results suggest that visual guidance reorganizes the attentional architecture of improvisation, allowing auditory and visual processes to converge on a target note simultaneously rather than sequentially. The study concludes that muscle memory and auditory-led cognition are complementary faculties, and that LED-guided instruments may function as a cognitive bridge, reducing the perceptual cost of locating a note and thereby freeing attentional resources for expressive, ear-first musical decisions. Future research will use EEG to assess cognitive load and creative engagement across skill levels, and to develop evidence-based practice programs that cultivate both motor fluency and auditory-led cognition/imagination.
