In both music and sport, excellence is often associated with control: mastering technique, preparing meticulously, and reducing the margin for error. Yet the most compelling performances frequently emerge in moments where uncertainty enters the equation—when artists and athletes must respond, adapt, and make decisions beyond what can be fully planned. Drawing on examples from my own artistic practice, as well as insights from the world of sport, this presentation explores the role of risk and uncertainty in high-level performance. Rather than viewing risk as something to eliminate, I make an appeal in order to consider how it can become a source of creativity, discovery, and growth. How can we as highly trained experts navigate situations we cannot fully predict? How can a different kind of preparation create freedom rather than restriction? And how might we cultivate environments—both for ourselves and for our students—in which experimentation and vulnerability become part of artistic development?
