The Piano Museum in Bangkok: Curiosity, Courage, and Craftsmanship in Piano History

The introduction of the piano to Thailand highlights a rich history of cross-cultural exchange and royal patronage. The keyboard instrument entered the kingdom during the Ayutthaya period through missionaries and elite collectors, reflecting Siam’s expanding international ties.

This presentation explores how these historical narratives intersect with curiosity, courage, and craftsmanship, using the extensive collection at The Piano Museum in the Kian Gwan Building in Bangkok as a primary case study. Preserving 117 antique instruments from nine nations, the museum serves as a physical archive of acoustic and technological evolution.

 

Through an examination of rare instruments in this collection-including two Broadwood square pianos as well as Danish square pianos, a Broadwood pianoforte similar to Beethoven's, Broadwood’s structurally daring "barless" grand, a replication of a 1782 Shudi-Broadwood harpsichord, a replica of Steinway No. 1 (the famous “Kitchen Piano”), an Art Nouveau design Ibach upright piano, Pleyel and Érard French grand pianos, and an American Crown piano with orchestral attachments-this paper illustrates the mechanical curiosity that drove acoustic innovation and the entrepreneurial courage required to defy traditional design. Finally, this study emphasizes how these preservation efforts transform a corporate heritage space into a vibrant educational resource and musical platform, keeping historical craftsmanship audible for contemporary audiences in Southeast Asia.
