Kai Fa Phaya Lo

This creative research presents a contemporary orchestral composition entitled Kai Fa Phaya Lo, inspired by the Siamese Fireback (Lophura diardi), the national bird of Thailand. The study aims to investigate the bird's vocal characteristics, physical appearance, and behavioral movements, and to transform these natural elements into musical materials for contemporary composition. The creative process began with a review of literature and biological information concerning the Siamese Fireback, focusing on its vocalizations, movement patterns, and distinctive visual characteristics. These data were analyzed and interpreted into musical elements, including melodic contour, rhythmic design, orchestral texture, tone color, and formal structure. The composition employs contemporary compositional techniques to reinterpret the bird's alternating vocal frequencies, natural movements, and visual identity through orchestral sound. The resulting work demonstrates a systematic approach to translating biological characteristics into an abstract musical language. The study shows that the integration of bird vocalizations and movement can provide new compositional strategies for developing musical materials while maintaining artistic expression. This interdisciplinary approach contributes to creative research by connecting biology, contemporary music, and Thai cultural identity within a unified compositional framework. The findings of this research suggest that natural sound and animal behavior can serve not only as artistic inspiration but also as structured sources for musical development. The composition therefore contributes to contemporary composition practice, expands interdisciplinary creative research, and promotes awareness of Thailand's biodiversity through musical art.
