Exploring the Impact of Proprioceptive Periodization Training on Vocal Performance and Somatic Awareness in Classical Singers

Classical voice training has traditionally emphasized auditory feedback and vocal technique, whereas the systematic development of somatic awareness—the conscious perception and regulation of bodily sensations during movement and singing—remains comparatively underexplored within vocal pedagogy. 

 

This action research project explores the impact of a Proprioceptive Periodization Training (PPT) program on vocal performance and somatic awareness among nine undergraduate classical voice students (three male and six female, aged 19–22) preparing for a production of The Magic Flute at the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music (PGVIM). Developed through an interdisciplinary collaboration between movement coach Warraseth Nakmaetheepitak and PGVIM voice teacher Puntwitt Asawadejmetakul, the project combines expertise in movement education and classical vocal pedagogy.

 

The Proprioceptive Periodization Training (PPT) framework developed in this study adapts Bompa's principles of athletic periodization to the pedagogical needs of classical singers, emphasizing proprioceptive development and somatic learning over physical conditioning alone. The program integrates Laban Movement Analysis, motor learning, proprioceptive training, and the Pilates-based concept of the powerhouse. Over six weeks (42 days), participants progressed from locomotor activities and bodyweight exercises to machine-based resistance training and dynamic movement tasks designed to enhance movement quality, self-observation, and functional coordination for singing.

 

Using an action research design with qualitative case studies, data were collected through researcher observations, participant reflections and interviews, and video recordings of training and rehearsals. Vocal performance was evaluated through each singer's observed responsiveness, coordination, and self-perceived control across the training period rather than using standardized performance measures. Preliminary findings suggest improved awareness of respiratory and core support mechanisms, reduced unnecessary muscular tension, and stronger integration of movement awareness with breathing, posture, and vocal production.

 

Guided by curiosity to explore movement-based approaches beyond conventional vocal instruction, and by the courage to adapt athletic training principles to singer development, this study presents an interdisciplinary model that may inform future research and pedagogical practice. Although developed within a single cohort, the framework offers a promising foundation for further investigation in broader educational contexts.
