Engineering Orchestration: Designing a Project-Based Orchestration Education Model for Engineering Students

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in technical and creative workflows, engineering education faces a pressing question: what remains uniquely human in the age of AI, and how can we leverage that value effectively when collaborating with intelligent systems? In response, we created a new course, Engineering Orchestration, which uses music to explore this question. We use "orchestration" in an expanded sense: beyond arranging sound, it names the coordination of people, timing, tools, and meaning that engineering collaboration demands. Music is, after all, one of humanity's oldest forms of collaboration. Rather than treating music as a subject in itself, the course treats it as a practical metaphor for engineering leadership and systems integration. Students experience rhythm, harmony, listening, conducting, improvisation, and performance as ways to practice the coordination challenges they will face as engineers. Each musical practice maps onto an engineering competency: rhythm onto timing and role division, harmony onto integration and AI co-creation, performance onto system delivery. Students meet each one in practice before it is named. These practices are supported by courses on music production and songwriting, on cultivating inspiration, and on the role of AI as a tool, confronting directly how human judgment and machine assistance can be balanced. The course ends with a final artistic project, ranging from musical performances to hybrid formats such as startup pitches or policy proposals. Through this culminating work, the goal is to demonstrate students' ability to orchestrate people, technology, AI, and message into a meaningful public expression. To pull this off, students must manage tools, technologies, and people toward a shared creative outcome. By developing orchestration skills in concrete musical practice, the course aims to help students transfer them to broader engineering and management contexts, cultivating leadership and coordination abilities that remain essential in a time where AI reshapes technical and creative work.
