An Index of Metals is a complex multimedia show. It involves music performed live by an amplified mezzo soprano and an eleven instruments ensemble, a frontal video multi-projection on 3 independent screens and a rich electronic music part which blends and alternates with the live performance.

The overall duration is about 50 min., without intermission.

The stage setup and lighting doesn’t change during the show, but an extreme care should be taken in placing the musicians and the conductor as well as in pointing and calibrating the lights in order to get the minimal possible visual interference with the 3 films. The films must remain the absolute centre of the scene.

The PA loudspeaker systems are divided in two zones: frontal system for instruments and sound files, surround system in the hall for sound files and effects. The sound files and the videos are organised in groups of play lists. These play lists are triggered during performance by an external element of the ensemble (the “Cue Man”) who is following both the score and the conductor (by means of a video return arriving to the control booths). The Cue Man operates on a computer which controls both the video playback and the audio playback.

Another very important performer is the sound engineer who has a double task: setting-up the amplified sound during the test and rehearsal phases; managing the levels of the amplified voice and instruments and of the electronic parts during the performance.

Finally, considering its nature of a “rite”, An Index of metals has a special formula for the beginning of the show. In order to get a clear exposition, all the above mentioned points will be examined separately in details in the following paragraphs.
