Kheak Chern Chao; Flute Sonata

This creative research aims to: 1) explore alternative methods and possibilities in composing program music, using the sonata form for unaccompanied flute as a case study, and 2) create a new sonata for unaccompanied flute based on a specified thematic framework.

 

The inspiration for this research originates from Kheak Chern Chao, a Thai traditional music. The resulting composition is an unaccompanied flute piece that encapsulates the impressions and narratives derived from the melody. To adjust the original theme into Western Sonata form, the piece incorporates a diverse range of compositional techniques characteristic of Western music, such as imitation, the development and expansion of the melody, the variation of dynamics and articulation, and the adjustment of scale, while maintaining an atmospheric essence of Thai musical aesthetics. This may be regarded as an exploration of a new artistic approach that aligns with the event's theme of curiosity and courage.

 

This composition serves a dual purpose: to promote appreciation of this melody and to foster consciousness regarding the preservation of Thai music. Through this newly composed work, the research aspires to contribute meaningfully to both cultural heritages, ultimately benefiting the broader community.
