The Biedermeier period (1815–1848), emerging from the upheaval of the Napoleonic Wars, is characterised by a retreat into domestic life and a musical aesthetic of accessibility, simplicity, and elegant restraint. Composers working in the salon tradition crafted chamber music (Hausmusik) for amateur home performance — approachable yet technically refined — and yet, within these shared constraints, demonstrated considerable individuality in their structural approaches.

The creative research project 'Biedermeier Trio' explored this period through the study and performance of selected serenades for violin, viola, and guitar by three Viennese composers: Leonhard von Call (1767–1815), Wenzeslaus Matiegka (1773–1830), and Anton Diabelli (1781–1858). This article presents a comparative analysis of their compositional structures, revealing a meaningful spectrum of complexity: from Call's transparent, sectional forms, through Matiegka's more elaborate designs — notably a Scherzo whose internal logic resembles sonata form — to Diabelli's harmonically adventurous movements, intensified through pedal points and diminished seventh chords. Together, these works demonstrate that even within the Biedermeier aesthetic of accessible elegance, individual composers pursued distinctly different structural ambitions, reflecting a period of rich transition between Classical formal clarity and Romantic expressive depth.
