BSRU Flex Camp as a Learning Space: Advancing the Potential of Thai Youth in Music Composition and Flexible Ensemble Performance

Recent years have highlighted a significant gap in Thai youth wind band education, particularly the scarcity of culturally grounded and contemporary repertoire alongside limited pedagogical innovation for flexible ensembles. This article examines the BSRU Flex Camp, an educational and creative initiative established by the College of Music, Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University. The camp aims to expand the repertoire for flexible ensembles and enhance youth musicianship in the Thonburi area. The project addresses a persistent gap in Thai youth wind band education: the limited availability of culturally grounded, contemporary works and flexible scoring practices suitable for diverse school and community ensembles. Through the BSRU Call for Flexible Score, Thai composers nationwide were invited to create new works that incorporate Thai melodies, local sound materials, and cultural identities as foundational elements. Selected compositions were integrated into the core learning materials in BSRU Flex Camp, where young musicians engaged in ensemble rehearsal, score reading, interpretive discussion, and public performance. The camp served as an engaged learning environment that connected composers, educators, performers, and audiences within a collaborative ecosystem of creation and dissemination. Its pedagogical value extended beyond technical skill development by enabling students to experience contemporary works as an active Thai cultural practice. The culminating performance held at Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan on 24 May 2026 provided a public platform to premiere contemporary repertoire, raise awareness of flexible ensemble practices, and strengthen connections among music education, cultural identity, and community engagement. This article contends that BSRU Flex Camp presents a scalable model for repertoire development and youth-centered ensemble learning in 21st- century Thai music education.
