Brave New World: A Conceptual Musical Project Inspired by Dystopian Popular Culture

This creative research project examines contemporary society through the conceptual framework of Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. The novel presents forms of social control that operate through repetition, behavioural conditioning, pleasure, entertainment, and the construction of social environments rather than through direct violence. These ideas encouraged the researcher to observe and question aspects of familiar social systems, leading to an inquiry into the role of sound, music, media, and technology in shaping human behaviour and perception in everyday life. This process of observation and questioning reflects the project's engagement with the theme of curiosity. The research explores issues related to behavioural conditioning, control through pleasure and entertainment, and the influence of media. Additional areas of inquiry include the role of technology, escapism, individuality, and the relationship between individual freedom and social stability. To inform the creative process, the researcher examined dystopian literature, concept albums, film music, Library Music, and works associated with futurism and science fiction. The research culminated in a concept album comprising seven compositions inspired by key ideas and events from Brave New World. Instead of directly retelling the novel's narrative, the project translates its central themes into musical structures, sonic environments, compositional processes, and aesthetic approaches. These ideas are manifested musically through repetition, sequenced patterns, layered electronic textures, manipulated media, and contrasts between machine-like processes and human performance. Through these compositions, the project reflects upon contemporary society while exploring the relationships between humanity, technology, media, and systems of control through music and sound.
