Music can carry the spirit of a place. This creative project transforms the heritage of Huai-Phlu, an ancient multicultural community in Nakhon Chai Si District, into sound, weaving Thai, Chinese, and Western traditions into one continuous musical story. The purposes of this practice-based research were (1) to compose a programmatic work, Huai-Phlu, for a contemporary ensemble (approximately 10–12 minutes), and (2) to present its premiere performance to the public. The work embodies Diversity in Unison by preserving each tradition’s distinctive voice while uniting them through shared thematic development and structural coherence.
The research method followed a structured creative process grounded in ethnomusicology, incorporating general cultural observations, literature review, comparative analysis of similar works, and composition techniques. Supplementary insights from cultural experts informed thematic choices and stylistic integration, ensuring that the music remained both authentic and innovative. The ensemble comprises 18 performers: 5 in the percussion section and 13 in the melodic section, designed to cover the full pitch range and timbral palette. Thai, Chinese, and Western instruments are combined to reflect the area’s layered history. The composition follows a rounded ternary form, with solo sections that highlight the timbre of each instrument, inviting audiences into Huai's historical atmosphere while showcasing the beauty of intercultural dialogue.
