Music has the power to connect worlds. This creative research embraces that idea, weaving Chinese, Thai, and Western musical traditions into a unified musical expression.

The purposes of this practice-based research were (1) to compose the first movement, Overture (approximately seven minutes), from a creative work titled Han Feng Zhong de Hua Suite for contemporary ensemble, and (2) to present its premiere performance to the public. The full suite is conceived as program music, with a total duration of approximately 18-20 minutes, aiming to portray cultural narratives through musical imagery. Each tradition maintains its voice while merging into a cohesive journey that embodies the theme of Diversity in Unison.

The research method followed a structured creative process grounded in ethnomusicology, incorporating a literature review, comparative analysis, and composition techniques. It also included identifying sources of inspiration and obtaining expert and institutional approval. These steps ensured that the work was firmly anchored in systematic research and creative practice, bridging cultural authenticity with musical innovation.

The ensemble consists of approximately 18 performers: 5 in the percussion section and 13 in the melodic section, covering the full pitch and timbre range. Key instruments include the Ra-nad, Erhu, and Trombone. The Overture follows a ternary form (A–B–A′), blending Chinese pentatonic melodies, Thai rhythmic patterns, and Western harmonic progressions. Solo passages highlight the timbral identity of each instrument, while ensemble textures foster intercultural dialogue. This work demonstrates how diversity, when brought together with care, can transform differences into harmony.
